- Worsted weight/size 4 yarn in 5 colors
- Worsted weight, Lion Brand Pound of Love (100% premium acrylic), 1020 yds (932 m) per 454 g skein, used in the following colors:
- Color 1: Mocha
- Color 2: Sugar Cookie
- Worsted weight, Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (100% acrylic), 170 yds (156 m) per 100 g skein, in the following colors:
- Color 3: Dusty Green
- Color 4: Pink and Dusty Blue (alternating)
- Color 5: Mustard
- 5 mm (H) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch marker
- Bobbin holders (I used bobby pins)
- Polyester filling or a 13 x 13-inch (33 x 33-cm) pillow insert

Gauge
17 sts x 9.5 rows in double crochet = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm)
For swatch 1, blanket in double crochet: Ch 21.
- Row 1: Dc in 3rd st from hook (skipped sts count as dc) and in each st across, turn. [20 dc]
- Rows 2–10: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in each st across, turn.
- 18 sts and 18 rows in single crochet = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm)

The standard blanket size is 44.5 inches (113 cm) wide and 62 inches (157 cm) long; this is the size you see in the photos. One repeat is 22 x 20 inches (56 x 51 cm).
Step 1: Before You Begin
Understanding the Chart & Changing Sizes
The chart for this blanket is 46 pixels wide. When making the standard size of the blanket, you will complete 2 double crochets for every pixel. This means that the chart is a 92-stitch repeat; the width of your project can be any multiple of 92 stitches, plus 4 for the border stitches (2 on either side). Each repeat will also be 49 rows long. One repeat is 22 x 20 inches (56 x 51 cm).
The standard blanket is two repeats wide, and three repeats long.
This pattern is worked row-by-row. For your first row that follows the chart, you will follow it from right to left (two times over, since the blanket is two repeats wide), as a typical right-handed crocheter would do. Then, you will turn your work to the other side for the next row and follow the chart from left to right. You will repeat this process for every row, flipping the entire blanket each time.
How to Change Colors
For this blanket, you will be changing colors mid-row in double crochet. If you already know how to do this, feel free to skip this section!
How to Use Bobbins
You will be working with multiple colors of yarn in one row. To avoid lots of tangling and to minimize the number of ends you have to weave in. I highly recommend creating a bobbin for each color section you work.
Step 2: Let's Begin!
Base Row: With color 1, ch 189, dc in third ch from hook (the skipped 2 chs count as a st), dc in each ch to end. You now have 188 sts.
Row 1: Ch 2 (counts as your first dc) and turn. Dc 1, then change to color 2 and begin working row 1 of the chart right to left. You will be working across the chart twice. For your final 2 sts, change back to color 1, dc 2.
Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Dc 1, then begin working row 2 of the chart left to right, completing color changes and adding or fastening off bobbin changes along the way. You will be working across the chart twice. Complete your final 2 sts in color 1.
Now you’re hopefully understanding the rhythm of the pattern! When completing further rows, continue working 2 sts in color 1 on either end of the blanket to create a border. On odd numbers, work the chart right to left; on even numbers, work the chart left to right.
Note: Since the chart is an odd number (49 rows), after you finish your first iteration of the chart, you will be working the chart right to left on even numbers instead, and vice versa.
You will have 49 rows per repeat—once you complete the first repeat, you’ll have 50 rows total including the base row—and 147 rows once the three repeats are completed (148 including the base row).
Row 149: You should be working in color 1 and have all other bobbins’ ends woven in or ready to be crocheted over during this row. With color 1, dc in each st to the end, then fasten off.
Weave in all remaining ends. Congrats! You’re finished! Now you can tell everyone that you just made a blanket that has over 28,000 stitches in it.

The standard pillow size is 11.5 inches (29 cm) wide and 13 inches (33 cm) long; this is the size you see in the photos. To stuff it, I used about 150 g of Poly-fil stuffing; you could also use a 13 x 13-inch (33 x 33-cm) pillow insert.
Step 1: Before You Begin

The Kitty Side
With color 1, ch 49.
Base Row: Sc in second ch from hook, then in each st down the row. You now have 48 sts.
Row 1: Ch 1 and turn, sc in first st. This is your border st; you will have one border st in color 1 on each side of the row. Now, switch to color 2 and begin working row 1 of the chart from right to left. You are making 1 st for every pixel, and you will be working across the chart once. For your final st, work 1 sc in color 1.
Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Sc 1, then begin working row 2 of the chart from left to right, completing color changes along the way. You will be working across the chart once. For your final st, change back to color 1, sc 1.
Now you’re understanding the rhythm of the pattern! When completing further rows, continue working 1 st in color 1 on either end of the pillow to create a border. On odd numbers, work the chart right to left; on even numbers, work the chart left to right.
Row 51: You should be working in color 1 and have all other bobbins’ ends woven in or ready to be crocheted over during this row. With color 1, sc in each st to the end, then fasten off.
Weave in all remaining ends. Congrats— you’ve finished nearly half the work for this pillow!
The Solid Side
With color 2, ch 49.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, then sc in each ch down the row.
Row 2: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in each st down the row.
Repeat row 2 until you have 51 rows in total, then fasten off.
Step 3: Final Steps
Place your two sides on top of one another with the wrong sides out. Starting on one of the corners, use whipstitch to sew together three of the four sides, ending at the fourth corner but not fastening off. I recommend using a length of yarn twice the length of what you’re sewing together.
Turn your pillow inside out so that it’s right side out now. Then fill the inside with Poly-fil to your liking (I use a lot to keep it firm!) or insert your pillow form. When you’re done, sew together the final side of the pillow and double knot to fasten off. Finally, weave in the end.
Congratulations, you’ve finished your matching pillow! Lay your hardworking head on your new creation—you deserve it.

My Review of the Crochet Retro Blankets in One Week
I had the opportunity to preview an advance copy of Retro Crochet Blankets in One Week before its official release and was excited to share the adorable Cat Nap Blanket as a free pattern on the blog. Overall, I found the pattern easy to follow, with clear written instructions. There are few work-in-progress photos, so crocheters who are comfortable following written patterns will likely get the most out of this book.
One thing I appreciate about this collection of retro crochet blankets is that many of the blanket designs use a similar crochet technique. Once you learn the technique, you can apply it to many of the other projects in the book. The main differences between the blankets come from the graph designs rather than specialty stitches or textures. While the projects aren't technically difficult, many feature frequent color changes to create the detailed graphs.
Most of the projects are designed as full-size blankets, making them beautiful statement pieces but also larger projects that may not be as convenient to take on the go. The book also includes several designs made from individual granny squares that are joined together, which can be a more portable option depending on where you like to crochet. Plus, granny squares are the perfect addition to a retro-inspired crochet collection, bringing that classic vintage feel to the designs.
