Mosaic Crochet Chart
How to Read Overlay Mosaic Crochet Chart
- Chart Layout:
- Each square represents a stitch.
- Blank square = single crochet (sc) in the back loop only (BLO)
- X square = double crochet (dc) in the front loop (FLO) of the stitch two rows below
- Direction of Work:
- Right-handed crocheters: Read charts right-to-left for every row.
- Left-handed crocheters: Read charts left-to-right for every row.
- All rows are worked on the right side (RS), if you were working a flat piece and not in the round, you would fasten off and cut the yarn at the end of each row before starting the next color.
- Stitching Guide
- Work sc BLO across unless an X square indicates a dc.
- The dc stitches should always be placed in the front loop of the stitch directly below (two rows down), skipping the stitch behind it.

Why I Made This
I've been especially inspired by mosaic crochet lately. I've always loved and admired colorwork in crochet, but I'll admit, I'm kind of a lazy crocheter, which is why you'll see me design all these no-sew amigurumi crochet patterns. That's why overlay mosaic crochet is becoming a game-changer for me.

When I first learned about overlay mosaic crochet, I thought it would be overwhelming. I watched many YouTube videos before I picked up my hook and just started making something. It turns out that mosaic crochet is surprisingly beginner-friendly!
With just single and double crochet stitches and working one color per row, I was able to create detailed patterns without the usual hassle of constant color changes. With overlay mosaic crochet, you're always working on the right side of the work.

So if you're making something flat, you'll have to cut your yarn at the end of the row, and then start again with a new piece of yarn at the beginning of the row. For this reason, I decided to make this project an overlay mosaic crochet infinity scarf. By working in the round, I am always crocheting on the right side of my work.
For my first mosaic crochet project, I decided to dive right in and design my own pattern. Ambitious, I know! I made an overlay mosaic crochet infinity scarf inspired by piano keys. The black-and-white design was simple but so obvious and unmistakable.

When I laid the finished scarf over my piano, I couldn't believe how much it looked like the real keyboard. The keys came out so crisp and clean, and the joins in the rounds were not noticeable. I was absolutely in awe of how it turned out.
If you're thinking about trying overlay mosaic crochet, this piano key scarf is a great place to start. It's beginner-friendly, fun to make, and looks amazing when finished.
