I Got Business Cards!

| Original: February 20, 2021

Every now and then, the thought of getting business cards pops into my head. But then I think to myself, what am I going to do with them? Who am I going to give them out to?

Then, I had this amazing experience...

A couple months ago, we visited the new Lego store that opened up at our local mall. While we were admiring all their displays, a girl that worked at the store approached us and asked about Mui's plush Jiji amigurumi.

Mui has been really attached to her Jiji lately and carries it everywhere she goes. She absolutely adores that black cat and well... her Jiji has seen better days.

Anyway, the girl recognized the amigurumi to be the black cat from Kiki's Delivery Service and asked if it was handmade. She has a Jiji plush toy but had never seen one of that size before.

She asked me if the Jiji amigurumi was knitted/crocheted. Then, she pointed out Mui's dress. Apparently, Mui was wearing her crocheted Summer's Not Over Yet play dress that day. Mui essentially looked like she was a walking advertisement for my blog! 😂

We got into a brief conversation about crafting and it turns out that this girl also crochets!

I got so excited that I shared with her that she could make her own Jiji plush if she wanted because the free crochet pattern is published on my blog. She went and grabbed a piece of paper so I could write down my blog address for her (I could only hope it was legible).

Hanson nudged me and asked me where are my business cards when I need them. I thought the same thing.

At that moment, I wished I could have given her a business card and made a more lasting impression. So that night I went home and started designing one on Canva. Here is what I've come up with after 24 hours.

I wanted to make the business card functional too. So as you can see, there's a 2-inch ruler on the right side. This business card can also function as a mini pompom maker and a 1-inch gauge swatch ruler.

It was so interesting to look at all the unique and smart business card designs when I was looking for some inspiration to design my own. Is this a clever business card idea or what?!

If you are thinking about ordering business cards, here are some basic things that you might want to consider:

1) Personal Information

Well, first of all, let's start with your name and your logo/brand. In terms of personal information, it all depends on what you feel is most relevant. For myself, I put my email, my blog URL and my social media handles.

Some people might choose to include their phone numbers or mailing addresses too. Those have their role and would be handy if you are attending conventions and plan to do some networking.

2) Social Media Handles

Some people might tell you to list all of the social media platforms that you are on. I opted to only list the social media platforms that I am active on.

I have a Twitter account, but I rarely check it. If you were to message me on Twitter, I might not respond to the message until a few months later. That won't look very good, so it'd be wise to only list the social media platforms that you are active on

3) Make it legible

It's tempting to fit as much information as possible on the business card, but keeping the font size legible is important. When designing my business card on Canva, it was zoomed in at like 350%. It wasn't until I zoomed out that I realized that my font was too small and I had to move things around.

4) Choose an Easy-to-Read Font

While we're on the subject of fonts, make sure you choose a font that is easy to read. Calligraphy might look elegant on a wedding invitation, but it can be difficult to read for some people who are trying to decipher your email address. Sans-serif fonts are typically the easiest fonts to read.

5) Double-check, triple-check, and quadruple-check your spelling!

Imagine getting so excited about ordering your business cards and then when they finally arrive, you realized that there's a spelling mistake! That would be the worst. I can't even tell you how many times I rechecked my spelling before finally committing to hitting the order button.

I just pressed the order button. The business cards are on their way! I am so excited!

Have you ever thought about getting business cards for your business? What would you put on your business card if you were to design one?
