Forager's Gloves from Fantasy Crochet by Jessica Bertolina

Updated on by

The Forager's Gloves are a beautiful, whimsical pair of crochet fingerless gloves that look as though delicate vines are winding their way around your hands and wrists. With their criss-crossing details and textured fabric, they feel both practical and a little bit magical, perfect for adding an enchanted, woodland-inspired touch to everyday wear.

Forager's Gloves Crochet Pattern

These crochet fingerless gloves are worked flat using a combination of star stitch and back loop crocheting to create a rich, ribbed texture. The pattern includes shaping for the thumb and is finished with lace details that mimic twisting vines, making it an especially satisfying project for crocheters who enjoy learning new stitches and creating pieces that feel thoughtfully detailed and unique.

Skill Level

Intermediate

Finished Measurements

  • One size for adults
  • 6 inches (15 cm) in circumference and 8.8 inches (22.5 cm) long
  • The gloves can easily be made longer or shorter by changing the starting chain, as long as there is an odd number of chains. If you wish to make them wider or narrower, make more or fewer rows than what is written in the pattern.

What You Need / Materials

  • Yarn
    • Fingering weight (#1) yarn, Lana Grossa Meilenweit 100 Tweed (80% wool, 20% polyamide), 459 yards (420 m) per 100 g skein:
      • Shown in Loden Green (168): 1 skein
    • This pattern can be made with any fingering weight, 4-ply, or sock yarn. Sock yarn is best because it tends to be more elastic.
  • Hook
  • Additional Materials

Gauge

28 sts (13 stars) x 24 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in pattern stitch

Stitches & Abbreviations

  • ch - chain
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • slst blo - slip stitch in the back loop only
  • yo - yarn over
  • yo slst blo - yarn over slip stitch in the back loop only
  • sc - single crochet
  • fsc - foundation single crochet
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • star stitch blo - star stitch in the back loop only

Pattern Notes

If a stitch is followed by a number, it means you have to make said stitch that amount of times. For example:

Slst blo 12: Slip stitch in the back loop in the next 12 sts.

Special Stitches

Star Stitch

The star stitch is worked in two rows: Row 1 creates the “stars,” and Row 2 closes them off. This is how you make the star stitch blo:

Row 1: Ch 3.
Insert your hook into the 2nd ch from the hook. Yo and pull a loop through.
Insert your hook into the next ch, yo, and pull through.
Insert your hook in the blo, yo, and pull through each of the following 3 sts, until you have 6 loops on your hook.
Yo and pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1.
Ch 1. This finishes the first star and creates an "eye" in the center.
*Insert your hook into the "eye" you just made. Yo and pull through.
Insert your hook into the space between the last spike from the first star. Yo and pull through.
Insert your hook into the same st where you worked the last loop of the previous star. Yo and pull through.
Insert your hook into the blo of the next st, yo, and pull through.
Repeat in the next st.
You should have six loops on your hook.
Yo and pull through all six loops. Ch 1.
Repeat from * until the end of the row, hdc in the last st, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as st). Make 2 hdc in the eye of each star. Hdc in the last st, turn.

Ch 61.

Note: You can make the gloves longer or shorter; the foundation ch needs to be an odd number.

Row 1: Insert your hook into the 2nd ch from the hook. Yo and pull a loop through. Insert your hook into the next ch, yo, and pull through. Repeat in the following chs, until you have 6 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through all six loops. Ch 1. This finishes the first star and creates an “eye" in the center.

Second star: *Insert your hook into the “eye" you just made. Yo and pull through. Insert your hook into the space between the last spike from the first star. Yo and pull through. Insert your hook into the same ch where you worked the last loop of the previous star. Yo and pull through. Insert your hook into the next ch, yo, and pull through. Repeat in the next chain. You should have six loops on your hook. Yo and pull through all six loops. Ch 1.

Repeat from * until the end of the row, hdc in the last ch, turn. [28 stars, 58 sts]

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as st), make 2 hdc in the eye of each star. Hdc in the last st, turn. [58]
Row 3: Ch 1, slst blo across, turn. [58]
Row 4: Ch 2, yo slst blo across, turn. [58]
Rows 5–6: Star st blo. [28 stars, 58]
Row 7: Ch 1, slst blo across, turn. [58] Row 8: Ch 2, yo slst blo across, turn. [58]
Repeat Rows 5–8 seven times, or until the piece measures the circumference of your wrist.

Shaping the Thumb

Before shaping the thumb, you’re going to join the fingers part by slip stitching the two sides of your piece together as follows:

Fold your piece in half, with the right side facing out. The yarn needs to stay between the two pieces. Ch 1, insert your hook in the blo of the top piece, then insert your hook in the full st of the bottom piece and make a slst. Repeat for the next 9 sts. You should have 10 sts sewn together.
Without fastening off, work the following on the top piece only:
Short-row 1: Row 1 of star stitch blo tutorial (page 46), make 7 stars. Do not hdc at the end, turn.
Short-row 2: Ch 1, make 1 hdc in the eye of the second star, 2 hdc in the eyes of the rest of the stars, hdc in the last st, turn. [12]
Short-row 3: Ch 1, slst blo 12, slst blo in the ch 1 of the previous row, slst in the eye of the last star. Slst blo into the same st where you worked the last loop of the star. Slst blo 2, turn. [17]
Short-row 4: Ch 1, slst blo 2, yo slst blo across, turn. [17]
Short-row 5: Row 1 of star stitch blo tutorial (page 46), make 7 stars. Do not hdc at the end, turn.
Short-row 6: Ch 1, make 1 hdc in the eye of the second star, 2 hdc in the eyes of the rest of the stars, hdc in the last st, turn. [12]
Short-row 7: Ch 1, slst blo 12, slst in the ch 1 of the previous row, slst in the eye of the last star. Slst into the same st where you worked the last loop of the star. Slst blo 4, turn. [19]
Short-row 8: Ch 1, slst blo 2, yo slst blo across, turn. [19]
Now you can sew the rest of the glove together by using the same technique used for the fingers part, starting from where you left off previously.
Ch 1, insert your hook in the blo of the top piece, then insert your hook in the st of the bottom piece, make a slst.

Repeat for the rest of the row. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

To prevent the finger opening from stretching out and to refine the edge, add a row of sc around the top.

Repeat for the other glove.

Laces (Optional)

Fsc 240 sts or ch 241, sc in the second ch from hook and each ch across. You can keep the laces loose and simply wrap and tie them around the gloves when they are worn. Alternatively, you can sew them on for a more secure and permanent effect.

My Review of the Fantasy Crochet Book

When flipping through Fantasy Crochet, I was genuinely impressed by the overall presentation and attention to detail. The photographs are beautiful, and the book includes clear, step-by-step instructions for stitches you may not already be familiar with, such as the star stitch used in the Forager's Gloves. Most of the designs fall within the advanced beginner to intermediate range, with a few patterns leaning more towards the advanced level, depending on your comfort level with shaping and stitch combinations.

What truly sets this book apart is how unique and immersive the designs feel, transporting you to a different world altogether. All the garments are made-to-measure, meaning there are no fixed sizes or standard numbers to follow, allowing you to create a custom fit that works perfectly for your body.
