If you are making a red-and-black poppy, begin with black. If you are making a colorful poppy with a yellow-and-green center, begin with the light-green yarn.
Make a MR.
Round 1: Place 6 SC in the MR. After the sixth stitch, pull the tail of the MR to close
the circle fully. [6]
Rounds 2–3: SC around for two rounds. If you are making a red-and-black poppy, do not FO. Proceed with round 4. At the end of the third round, SL ST, then FO, leaving a short tail. You do not need to weave in the end. [6]
Round 4: If you are making a red-and-black poppy, the center will not require any color changes. Proceed to * and continue with the pattern. Gather your light-yellow yarn, and make a slipknot. Place the slipknot on your hook. Insert the hook into any of the stitches of the green poppy center with a SC. * Repeat [1 SC, CH 2] around the entirety of the poppy center. Then, FO, leaving a short tail. You do not need to weave in the end. [6]

Step 3: CH 5. Place 2 FLO TR in the same stitch. Continue by placing 2 more FLO TR in the next 5 stitches. You should have 12 TR stitches total, which forms one petal. After the twelfth TR, CH 5, and FLO SL ST to the same stitch.
Step 4: FLO SL ST to the next stitch. CH 5, and place 2 FLO TR in the same stitch. Continue by placing 2 more FLO TR in the next 5 stitches. After the twelfth TR, CH 5, and FLO SL ST to the same stitch.

Step 5: Next, we will be adding edging to the petals. SL ST to the next stitch. CH 5, and SL ST to the top of the first CH 5 you made for the petal. Repeat [SL ST, CH 1] around the edge of the first petal. Then, CH 5, and SL ST into the base of the petal. SL ST to the next stitch, and CH 5. Then, SL ST to the top of the second CH 5 you made for the second petal. Repeat [SL ST, CH 1] across the edge of the second petal. Then,
CH 5, and SL ST to the base of the petal.
Step 6: SC around in the leftover back loops from the original 12 SC from step 2.
Step 7: After SC around, work 3 SL ST. This is to stagger the second layer of petals. Repeat the petal process twice more: CH 5, work 6 FLO TR INC. CH 5, and FLO SL ST into the same stitch. FLO SL ST to the next stitch, and CH 5, work 6 FLO TR INC. Then, CH 5, and FLO SL ST into the same stitch.

Step 8: Next, add edging to the second layer of petals. SL ST to the next stitch. CH 5, and SL ST to the top of the CH 5 you made for the third petal. Repeat [SL ST, CH 1] around the edge of the third petal. Then, CH 5, and SL ST to the base of the petal. SL ST to the next stitch, and CH 5. Then, SL ST to the top of the CH 5 you made for the fourth petal. Repeat [SL ST, CH 1] across the edge of the fourth petal. Then, CH 5, and SL ST to the base of the petal. FO, leaving a short tail. Weave in the end.
Poppy Calyx
Begin with the green yarn.
Make a MR.
Round 1: CH 2, and then place 6 HDC in the MR. After the sixth HDC, SL ST to the first HDC. Pull the tail of the MR to partially close the circle. Be sure to leave a small circle in the center of the MR for the poppy stem. [6]
Round 2: CH 5. Working down the chain, starting from the second chain from the hook: 1 SL ST, 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC. 1 SL ST to the next HDC, and repeat [CH 5, working down the chain: 1 SL ST, 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 DC] five more times. After the fifth repeat, FO. Leave a short tail, and weave in the end.
Poppy Leaf (Make 1 or 2 per stem)
Gather the green yarn and 22-gauge floral wire. You will need 8 inches (20 cm) of wire per leaf.

Step 2: For the leaf, you will be crocheting around the floral wire. Starting from the third chain from the hook: 1 SC, 2 HDC, 2 DC, 2 TR, 2 DC, 2 HDC. Place 3 SC in the last chain. [14]
Step 3: Fold the wire in half, and slide your work to the right-hand side of the wire. We will be working on the left-hand side of the wire, from right to left. Be sure to work over the yarn tail so you do not need to sew it in later: SK 1 ST, 2 HDC, 2 DC, 2 TR, 2 DC,

Assembly
This step is optional, only for the green-and-yellow–centered poppies. Do not do this step if you made red-and-black poppies.
Begin by sewing details to the poppy center: gather approximately 12 inches (30 cm) for the full-size flower and 10 inches (25 cm) for the mini size. Sew 5 stitches into the poppy center, from the light-yellow edge into the MR. After completing 5 stitches, FO, and cut off any excess yarn.
If you are making the traditional red-and-black poppies, begin the assembly process with this step. Place a small amount of hot glue into the center of your flower. Before the glue dries, attach the poppy center to the flower petals. Press down on the center piece to secure it in place.
Insert your floral wire stem into the underside of the poppy. Make sure it does not extend through the top of the poppy. Once you are satisfied with the placement, hot glue the stem in place.
Grab your green yarn, calyx, and leaves for the remaining steps.
