Disgust Amigurumi Doll Crochet Pattern

Friday, 20 August 2021

Ever since I started making the Inside Out characters (Sadness, Joy and more recently, Anger), BB has been asking me to make Disgust. As I watched BB grow up, I noticed her become more girly. She's into pretty dresses, prints, textiles and overall seems to have a very good sense of fashion.

As I was creating the amigurumi pattern for Disgust, she would point out and remind me to add certain details to her outfit. For example, her scarf, her shoes, the flare to her dress, her belt, and even her belt buckle, etc.

Like my other amigurumi patterns, I often have to go through a few trials and errors before I am happy with my final product, and this one is no different.

Trying to find the perfect shade of green is not as easy as one would think. I initially tried using what I had in my stash. I used a shade of green for what I thought would work for Disgust's skin colour, but my first amigurumi Disgust doll ended up looking like some kind of frog lady.

I was so glad that I got a chance to work with WeCrochet and try out their Brava Worsted yarn because they have such a huge palette of colours to choose from.

I end up ordering some Brava Worsted yarn in Alfalfa. I was originally shocked by how bright it was. It reminded me of a highlighter green.

I was a little hesitant and thought I must have ordered the wrong green because I thought it might be too bright. But clearly, I was wrong and the colour turned out just perfect as you can tell by my photos.

So without further ado, let me share with you the pattern to Disgust.

Stitches & Abbreviations

  • st/sts - stitch/stitches
  • ch - chain
  • slst - slip stitch
  • sc - single crochet (using the yarn under method)
  • sc inc - single crochet increase, 2 single crochets in one stitch
  • sc dec - single crochet decrease, single crochet 2 stitches together
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • BLO - back loops only

Notes

  • I made this amigurumi doll using the "Yarn Under Single Crochet" technique. This technique makes the stitches tighter and appears more aligned.
  • I also used a half-colour changing technique to achieve cleaner lines when changing colours from one row to another.
  • When working on the hairpiece, I used the underside of the piece as the "outside" or the side that is showing. The curls of the strands will follow a natural curl towards the face.

Put in your safety eyes. I put mine between rows 10 and 11, about 7 stitches apart. Stuff the head with poly-fil before the opening gets too small.

Round 18: [Sc, sc dec, sc] x 6 times (18 sts)
Round 19: [Sc, sc dec] x 6 times (12 sts)
Round 20: Sc BLO in each st around (12 sts)
Round 21-23: Sc in each st around (12 sts)

Cut and fasten off. Stuff firmly and push rows 20-23 inside the head to create a tunnel and a hole for the neck to go into later.

Arms (x2)

Using a 3.0 mm crochet hook with alfalfa green yarn...
Round 1: Magic Ring with a base of 6 sc (6 sts)
Round 2-5: Sc in each st around (6 sts)
Cut and fasten off.

Legs and Body

Using a 3.0 mm crochet hook with magenta-pink yarn...
Round 1: Magic Ring with a base of 6 sc (6 sts)
Round 2: [2 Sc, sc inc] x 2 (8 sts)

Change to alfalfa green yarn...
Round 3-4: Sc in each st around (8 sts)

Change to grass green yarn...
Round 5-7: Sc in each st around (8 sts)
Cut and fasten off the first leg.

Repeat round 1-7 to make a second leg. Do not cut or fasten off, instead, finish off with a Ch 2.

Round 8: Join the second leg with the first leg. 8 sc around the first leg, 2 sc along the ch, 8 sc around the second leg, 2 sc along the other side of the ch (20 sts)
Round 9-10: Sc in each st around (20 sts)
Round 11: Sc BLO in each st around (20 sts)

Change to peapod green yarn...
Round 12: Sc in each st around (20)

Watch out, multiple colour changes in this upcoming round...
Round 13: 4 sc (in peapod), 6 sc around the first arm (in alfalfa), 10 sc (in peapod), 6 sc around the second arm (in alfalfa), 6 sc (in peapod) (32 sts)

Stuff your doll as the opening is getting smaller...

Using only peapod green yarn...
Round 14: Sc dec in each st around (16 sts)
Round 15: Sc dec in each st around (8 sts)

Change to alfalfa green yarn...
Round 16-20: Sc in each st around (8 sts)

Cut and leave a long tail to attach the body to the head by threading the yarn tail through the hole on the bottom of the head. Then sew it to the top of the head and then sew it to the neck again to secure it. Do this a few times to make sure your head is secured.

Skirt

Work on the front loops from round 11 with the doll legs facing away from you. Using a 3.0 mm crochet hook and peapod green yarn...
Round 1: Sc join to the front loops from round 11, [sc, sc inc] x 10 times (30 sts)
Round 2: [Sc, sc inc, sc] x 10 times (40 sts)
Round 3: Sc in each st around (40 sts)

Cut and fasten off.

Scarf

Using a 3.0 mm crochet hook and magenta pink yarn...
Ch 20
Tie it around the neck and stitch it in place.

Hairpiece / Wig

Using a 3.0 mm crochet hook and bright blue yarn...
Round 1: Magic Circle with a base of 6 sc (6 sts)
Round 2: Sc inc in each st around (12 sts)
Round 3: [Sc, sc inc] x 6 times (18 sts)
Round 4: [Sc, sc inc, sc] x6 times (24 sts)

Right Side of the Hair

Strand 2: Repeat strand 1 (13 sts)

Bangs
Strand 3: Ch 14, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, 2 sc inc, sc up the ch, then slst into the next st on the round (15 sts)
Strand 4: Ch 15, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, 2 sc inc, sc up the ch, then slst into the next st on the round (16 sts)

Left Side of Hair
Strand 5: Ch 18, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, skip 1, sc, skip 1, sc up the ch, then slst into the next st on round (16 sts)
Strand 6: Ch 16, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, 2 sc inc, sc up the ch, then slst into the next st on round (17 sts)

Back of the Head
Strand 7-8: Ch 15, hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook and up the ch, skip 1, then slst into the next st on round 4 (13 sts)
Strand 9-15: Ch 13, hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook and up the ch, skip 1, then slst into the next st on round 4 (11 sts)

Cut and fasten off with a long strand to sew the hairpiece onto the head. Alternatively, you can use some heavy-duty glue to fix it on the head.

Eyelashes

In the animated movie, Disgust has these long dramatic eyelashes. So instead of embroidering eyelashes, I decided to sacrifice a set of false eyelashes by cutting out two small pieces. Then, I used some glue to attach them above the safety eyes to give my amigurumi doll some extra glam!
