Hanami Dango Amigurumi Food Crochet Pattern

| Original: April 10, 2021

After making my amigurumi curry fishball, I couldn't stop thinking about how they also resemble this Japanese treat called Hanami Dango.

So just for fun, I decided to make my own amigurumi Hanami Dango (three-colored dango). I love making amigurumi food!

Japanese Dangos are small bite-sized balls of mochi rice that are often seen at cafes or festivals. These tricolor treats are most popular around springtime during cherry blossom festivals, but they're actually sold all year round.

In fact, the word Hanami literally translates to "flower viewing".

Hanami dango (3 colored dango) has its iconic pink, white, and green dango on a stick. And it's normally placed in the same order and position on the skewer. The three colors are to represent the changing seasons: cherry blossoms (pink), snow (white), and new growth of grass (green).

I've seen dango amigurumi patterns out there before and never thought to make my own, but here I am with my very own dango amigurumi crochet pattern.

This one might be a bit different than the ones you've seen out there because this one can be taken on and off the skewer.

What You Need / Materials

Most of these items can be purchased through our affiliate links. Purchasing items through these links will not cost you any extra money. Please see our disclosure policy for more details.

Stitches & Abbreviations

  • st/sts - stitch/stitches
  • ch -  chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • sc inc - single crochet increase, 2 single crochets in one stitch
  • sc dec - single crochet decrease, single crochet 2 stitches together
  • BLO - back loops only

Notes

  • These Dango mochi balls are crocheted from the inside out. First, you crochet a tunnel for the stick to go through, then you crochet the ball on the outside.
  • The top mochi ball does not have a through-tunnel to thread the stick through but just sits at the top of the stick. You can choose to make it just like all the other mochi balls if you do not want a "topper" mochi ball.
